To prevent the tongue of the belt flapping about and to replace the leather loops supplied, which wear quickly, I have made several of these belt loops from brass, usually taken off wonky carpenters’ try squares. It is possible to correct a square, but once out of square, it can’t be relied upon. I also make use of the stock, if ebony or rosewood. I particularly like the patina of the one on the trousers. And I don’t mind that they are very crudely done.
Before bending the brass, it is necessary to anneal it by heating it to red and quenching, as I am sure most of you know.
