Bell X-1 being drop launched from a Boeing B-29 Superfortress over the Mojave Desert. On October 14, 1947, an X-1 piloted by USAF Captain Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier, after the craft was air-launched from the bomb bay of a Boeing B-29 Superfortress.
