Perhaps debris left from hurricane damage. I have often wondered what happens to all of the debris washed into the ocean during storms. I suspect the ocean does does what it does, working like a huge hammer mill, grinding all of the junk into small pieces, the wood floats away, the nails and screws fall to the bottom to be buried in the sand.
