The 'Poverty Trap' is brutal.
They only have their own time to spend instead of money.
It takes three of them a half hour to pump the same amount of water any one of us could pump by flipping a switch for 30 seconds.
Their time is spent in very low-level tasks, which devours their time, which is the only true riches we have (as far as building civilization).
Sigh . . . it is truly a broken world.

OTOH, hand some high school quarterback a piece of bamboo and task him to get water out of a hole. Hand these impoverished folks a piece of modern junk and I'll wager they can think of a dozen ways to repurpose it in the time it takes a quarterback to google its original use.
