I wish I could see the mechanism that did the rotation. I can't tell if it's geared, wheeled, or they are using cordage for it.

Building one of these is on my short list of projects.

If you don't already have an answer, it appears there's a steel rack gear attached to the side of the round rod closest to the hole where the pencil goes through. I'd guess it engages with a pinion gear, the center of which is the hole the pencil goes through.
