    Anti-distraction helmet - photo

Anti-distraction helmet aka "the Isolator" was invented by the science fiction writer, inventor, and editor Hugo Gernsback. It consists of a wooden helmet which blocked out sound and limits vision in order to help the wearer focus on whatever task they had in hand.

Lol again and again. A helmet to alleviate distractions, in a private study while desk is littered with candlestick phone, some kind of speaker, a clock - possibly alarm clock, notebooks, and more.
Secondary marketing scheme targeted certain blind-dating sites; when a diving helmet with the windows blacked out, just won't do.

Nothing more distracting than 40 lbs of wood and a hissing air supply whilst your trying to write a novel........
Why the "google rims"? Wouldn't 2 holes drilled in the helmet suffice?
And whats with the piece of 3 x 1.5 sticking out the front???

Actually the Google rims are glass, painted black with slits wide enough for 2 lines of text. The box is a baffled exhaust. The drawing in Altair's link below shows it clearly, and explains via a sectional view the "The Ideal Office or Study where work requiring concentration is to be performed".

Hugo was quite the executive and had a lot of things going on simultaneously...14 balls in the air. Those that appreciate Sci-Fi will know the Hugo award using his first name. Heinlein was a 4 time winner and nominated 13 times including his wins.

And keep in mind he invented the first "google glasses" (TV) in 1963, 4 years before he died at 83.
