I now take additional measures to protect myself from fast spinning things because they take out meat in an instant. For example, I tie wrap my router wrenches to the plug end of the cord and that forces me to unplug the motor before I change bits. After using a tool for some time I can become a bit complacent in its' use and not always give it the proper respect for the inherent danger, so devising protective measures is more than worth the inconvenience to me.
This advice comes from a guy who once got into a Safety Planer with his thumb on Sunday and a router bit with his social finger on Tuesday. Some of it does grow back eventually but it will never be the same as before.
