The need to readjust the slot width can be avoided by making the locking screw perform an automatic adjustment every time a scale is locked in place.

My version...



uses an angled brass sleeve on the locking nut...



As the locking screw is tightened down, the brass angle forces the scale against the fixed stop (also angled) on the cross bar.

A closer look at the brass sleeve...



The second threaded hole on the cross bar allows it to be used with a wider 12" scale.

A slight variant of this idea was used on my marking out tool...
