Due to constructional considerations, the spacing of the dog holes in my workbench along the bench differs from the spacing of the holes across the bench. In addition to bench dogs, I required an adjustable clamping/planing stop, which can be used lengthwise or width wise on the bench. The stop was made of 18 mm plywood, 22 mm dowels, an M6 T-nut and an M6 cup-square bolt (Photo 1). Dimensions are shown in Fig 1, but can obviously be adapted to suit the bench and dog holes. The fixed leg of the stop is glued in place and the movable leg slides along a slot routed in the stop (Photos 2, 3 and Fig 1). Two flats are filed or ground on the head of the M6 bolt to allow it to slide in the slot without rotating (Photo 4). In use, the movable leg is adjusted to suit the dog hole spacing and is then locked in place by twisting it by hand. The tool is used on it’s own as a planing stop, or in conjunction with clamps, cams or the dogs in the front and tail vises. Some uses are shown in Photos 5 – 7.
