Some year I am going to ask Santa for a 3-D printer.
Just FYI, Your 17mm wrench will work on almost all of your 11/16" nuts and bolts. 11/16"= 0.6875", 17mm≈0.6693. The tolerance on both nuts and bolts, and the wrench will allow it to work in most situations, even though from the numbers, the wrench is ≈0.018 too small. The metric wrench fits most 11/16" nuts and bolts better than the 11/16 wrench.
Others include 11mm≈ 7/16, 14mm is almost exact 9/16, 16mm≈5/8, 17mm≈11/16, 19mm≈3/4, 25mm≈1", etc.
There is a whole discussion of 11/16" wrenches on the jalopy journal. If you are into that kind of stuff.
So in general I agree with your premise however in this case that is not true. I actually made a video about this after reading your comment but might just skip it. It is probably correct that 17mm will work on many 11/16" nuts but had they worked on the nuts on this lathe I would have used a 17mm wrench and not felt the need to buy another wrench. The Atlas 11/16 nuts that I have encountered on this lathe so far are between .676 and .687. Of my 3 Craftsman 17mm wrenches, 2 will go on only the smallest nut but one is so tight it will not seat more than half way and the other is too tight to reliably use. Several other various brands have the same results. None will fit on anything other than that single .675 nut. My point here is that I know you can use metric on imperial sizes and vice versa but 17mm is not a good one to do that with, certainly not reliably, you might as well just get the right wrench for the job. There is also probably a difference here between old and modern as well. Modern nuts seem to be horribly undersized compared to the older stuff I typically work on. BTW as part of making the video I discovered 3/8 Whitworth works great for 11/16" as well as 18mm, maybe 17 in a pinch. All the best!
