I have a friend who has to duck when passing through a normal height door I'd hate to meet the being who had to duck to go through those doors. Note the height of the actual door handles are above the man's head probably positioned their so their small children could reach the handles

You are correct those doors were not part of the original structure which had the groundwork commissioned sometime around 325 Ad The doors can be traced back to the emperor Domitian before that the Curia Julia (senate House) completed in 29 BCe but could have been cast near the beginning of its construction some 30 years prior they were not installed in the Basilica until around 1660
