I think it's kinda like a hit&miss engine,I think there is a movable cam that engauges when it's needed to to activate the valve, look at the camshaft wobble all over the place not opening the valve, then it dont wobbel and the valve opens.possiably a power or speed govener of some sort.pretty neat.kinda like the new cars with the hyd lifters that pump up and down according to the computer to save fuel. what ever it sure took some thinking to get it to work and not fall appart, I for one like it!!

I remember the 1917 chevy a guy brought us to try to get to run, it had been all over town after the engine had been rebuilt and nobody could get it to run at all. all exposed rockers with oil can oiling. awesome car hell we were driving it around to some local night clubs in about 30 min time of fixing it.taking some people for rides having a blast. 3 days lator the owner came and got it, no charge, he drove it in a parade or two then put it inside his Italian restraunt's bar....witch burned to the ground about 5 years lator. so sad. I used to eat there every friday. a loss of a good lunch and bigger loss of history we made come to life. I wonder how many women remember riding around in that with us back in the 80's. I presume it got scraped after the fire.
