Yeah, the website (amazon) says that it's chalk...but if it is, it's mixed with something that pretty much makes it into more of a crayon. Little disappointing...it's not as easy as I had thought it would be to wipe off (when I purchased it). Dab spit on your finger and it cleans up pretty quickly though. I would imagine it would be great for all sorts of things (leather as well)...but metal would definitely be a plus as graphite doesn't do much of anything when you use it. I'll keep your tip to use it on metal in my mind...I've always used sharpies, but of course those leave thick lines.Originally Posted by nova_robotics

What about the silver streak pencil which is popular for metals? I’m guessing it works fine on wood but maybe isn’t so easy to clean/remove and I don’t know if it leaves residue behind when it comes time to add a finish.
I just looked them up...I didn't know they made a mechanical variety. I should get one. Any idea how thick the 'leads' are?

2.4mm sounds about right, because I think there are other pencils which use a similar size “lead”. I haven’t tried interchanging the silver streak “leads” with graphite in different holders like a drafting pencil.
