I used a similar technique for a neck pocket and pickup cavity of a bass I'm building. I outlined with a sharp chisel, hogged out the center with a trim router, then used the chisel to tidy up the perimeter. It's kinda scary to freehand route, but it's faster and more reliable than forstner bits or chiseling the whole way.

Bro, you're less than 20 miles from my house. I'm just barely inside of tippy county, south end haha
Totally agree with you. Routers have been my nemesis for a while. Of all the tools I own, I think the router is what scares me the most. But they have their benefits.
Can't get over you living in Lafayette. I'm headed to Christos tomorrow!
Ha! It hadn't even occurred to me that you might be local-ish. I've been subbed to your channel for a minute. Why you don't have more subs is a mystery. You have a unique way of getting jobs done and your delivery is more shared learning than presentation. If you like Indian food try Sharma's in Eastway Plaza next time you're in town.

I looked it up as soon as you posted it. Wife and I love going to Crawfordsville (we're between there and Lafayette) only because it's so quiet. I've lived in Lafayette and West Lafayette my entire life minus 5 years. I'll definitely have to try it out! We usually get En Lais on Fridays (if you haven't been there...you must go there) but this sounds awesome!
