Homemade emergency power system constructed from a deep cycle marine battery, a 500W inverter, a 10-amp battery charger, a 3/4" plywood enclosure, and battery cables.

I've been looking into these things and it looks like the deep cycle battery would be the most expensive outlay. But putting one together should be a lot cheaper, and more satisfying, than buying a commercial unit.
